Troy and I met at The University of North Dakota. We had seen and heard of each other on campus, but met at a party. Troy walked up to me, and he noticed I had the newest iPhone, so he asked  Siri, "Who Troy Huff was?" Siri replied, "I do not have that contact. Should I add Troy Huff as a new contact?" Siri will go down as my greatest wing-woman.

I knew from our first date that I loved him, we were best of friends and we fell madly in love with each other. I knew that yes, Troy, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, came to North Dakota on a full ride to pursue his basketball dreams, but God also brought him to my hometown to meet me. I am still so thankful he chose to go to school there.

After our senior year of college, Troy signed to play basketball professionally in Italy, and we moved together across the world. We did long-distance for multiple years while Troy lived out his dreams of being a professional basketball player and I went after my dreams of making it onto NBC’s show The Voice Season 12, Team Gwen Stefani. We were living out our dreams, continents apart but still so in love, it was magical.

On July 8th 2017, after 6 amazing years together, Troy proposed to me on Manhattan Beach in California. I knew we would be together forever; I just had no idea he could pull off a proposal that felt like a dream. He had his brother and sister-in-law in on it, and of course, I was not aware at all that he was going to propose. He made reservations for dinner, and we sat by the window watching the sunset, drinking some of the strongest margaritas we've ever had.

I had no clue that when he told me to go down to the beach with him that he had set up a heart shape made of rose petals and candles and in the center was the ring box. The sunset was hot pinks and purples and it was the most romantic experience ever. It was the best proposal from the best guy I know asking me to spend the rest of my life with him.

We set a date, July 21st 2018, and started checking things off the to-do list: venue, church, etc. I have always dreamt of planning my own wedding, so I was beyond excited for the year ahead. In Sept 2017, we moved to Nashville TN, for me to pursue singing even harder. Planning a wedding across the country was the most fun challenge I have had. But we made it work, thanks to the help of my incredible mother, Bridgie.

We got married at St Mary’s Catholic Church I grew up in, the church my parents got married in, the church my sister got married in -- it was so personal and to have it in my hometown of Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Troy and I didn't do a "first look," as I wanted to bring the old tradition back of the first look happening when I walk down the aisle. I feel like people stage that special moment and I wanted the emotions to be real and raw and genuine, not posed. I chose to wear a blusher on my veil as well -- something that is a very traditional and romantic element that tends to not be used. I found it so romantic and so magical to have my father unveil me to my fiance.

The moment those church doors opened and I saw the church filled with every person we loved there to support our union, I was moved to tears, and I mean ugly crying tears. I saw my handsome soon-to-be husband moved to tears waiting for me up at the altar. My dad told me to walk slow and soak in the moment because it goes fast, so I looked around and recognized everyone's face. I will never forget that moment.

After we got married and took a big photo on the front steps of the church, Troy and I hopped into our getaway car. I wanted a fun way to drive off, to bring in a vintage aspect and to have a  moment Troy and I could be alone to revel in the fact that we just got married. From many of my friends who were previously married, I was told to have time with just Troy and me, so that was our moment alone together on the most special day of our lives. The sun was shining, the breeze was perfect, and there we were taking our first drive as Husband and Wife. When I tell you that our day was perfect, I genuinely mean it.

I tried on around 20 dresses the day before I found my dream dress. I kept waiting for the feeling of “this is it.” I knew I would find the one that made me feel all of the feels and burst into tears. The moment I saw the Lynn dress by Enzoani, I knew it was for me. The removable skirt gave me the big ball gown feel, but knowing I had the sexy fitted dress underneath just added to the fun of my dress. I ordered more of the appliques from the bodice of my dress and had custom sleeves made. My dress surpassed anything I had ever dreamt of. My family and friends said it was me in a dress form. It was everything I wanted and more.

My wedding flowers were in honor of my Grandma Mabel who passed away when I was little. She raised me and taught me how to sing. She had peonies and lilies of the valley in her yard so to have those in my bouquet, it felt like she was there.

My aunt also gave me my Grandma Mabel’s ring to wear on the day of my wedding with a blue jewel in it for my something blue. My Grandma Helen, the little beautiful lady in blue shared a special dance with Troy and I at our reception. She is 93 years old and doesn't get to dance as she used to, so I had to have her share that special moment with Troy and I. It meant the world to have her there on our wedding day.

The flower hoops for my bridesmaids, I made myself and I thought it was something different besides bouquets, which can be really expensive.

I want to thank Troy, my amazing husband for being such a hunk ;). My parents for everything they did to make our wedding a dream come true and to everyone who attended and took part of our special day. For everyone who helped set up and take down our venue and for all the moving parts that helped to make everything run so smooth. To the designer Enzoani, thank you for making the dress of my dreams. It truly was like we were living in a fairytale, and I am forever grateful.

Any advice to other brides?

I have tons :) I am writing a blog about my wedding so the list can go on and on :) Stay true to your vision. Don’t aim to please everyone else because in the end, you will end up not pleased. Choose your top 5 aspects you want to go all out on, and go for it. Our top 5 go as follows:

1 - DJ

2 - Photographer/Videographer

3 - My dress/His custom suit

4 - The flower wall that I made for our photobooth

5 - Our midnight snack, pizza and ranch, in ranch fountains -- yes it was epic, and it was a fun aspect as it was Troy and I’s first date meal.

Wedding planning can be stressful, but remember what it is all about, you and your fiance. Take a moment to look around at everyone there that loves you and supports you, whether it be at your reception or your ceremony. You probably won’t ever get those same people in one room again, so really soak in the magic of it all.
