As summer ends and fall begins - Nande and Chulu tie the knot in a classic modern wedding at the Inimitable Venue in Muldersdrift, South Africa.
Chulu and I met on Facebook! We share a very strong bond over sports, and that’s what drew us towards each other (only to find we had close to 60 friends in common and he grew up with my best friend).
We did a long-distance relationship for just over a year until we decided it was time to be serious and move in with each other.
We got engaged on a Country Lodge in Pretoria, South Africa on October 13, 2018. I had just cut my hair that morning (shaved it all off) … what’s that Coco Chanel saying?
“A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life."
Most memorable moment?
Where do I even begin! It is without a doubt the happiest day of our lives! So much so, there are a few special moments…
My dad died in a car accident in 1995. Chulu’s best friend, who would’ve been the best man, died in 2012. As a remembrance for them, we released two white doves. My younger brother walked me down the aisle. This was a very special moment for my mom; she says she shed a tear or two.
The next special moment was a performance by our favorite jazz artist -- our first dance was to his performance, and it was truly magical. We felt like we were alone in the room, with just Mandisi singing to us. We were very intentional about having fun at our wedding, so we laughed, danced, drank, and had a great time. Our photographer was able to capture that for us perfectly, we are smiling and laughing in pretty much every single photo.
The groom’s suite is where all the groomsmen as well as Chulu’s cousins got dressed. That kicked off the party and set the tone for the wedding as the merriment in the suite culminated in them sharing a few drinks and bellowing out Xhosa songs (known as igwijo) at the top of their lungs.
The saying “a mother always knows best” is really true! I went with my mom and best friend (matron of honor) for the fitting.
This was the only dress my mom chose. We rolled our eyes at how simple and boring it was…until I tried it on! It was perfect.
Advice to other brides?
A wedding planner saves lives! I cannot express this enough. Our planner was an absolute dream. We pretty much sat and picked what we liked and what we didn’t. Then the biggest thing, have fun! Be intentional about it. The day has to reflect your personality.
