Industry Insider: Talita Van Greuning

Ever wonder how those perfect "in the moment" photos come to be? Enzoani chats with South African-based photographer Talita Van Greuning, who gives us her insights for wedding photography. Tell us a little about yourself!

I am a Cape Town-based wedding and authentic love photographer, self-proclaimed cat lady, and Steri Stumpie (it’s a chocolate milk brand in South Africa) ambassador. I find joy in capturing the real moments between loved ones – the flawed, the vulnerable, the raw, and the honest flashes. These are the moments that make us perfectly imperfect. You won’t find any posed and polished photos here. There’s an app for that. I am coffee-obsessed – I will always have time to grab a cappuccino with my brides and grooms. I also adore animals. I have eight rescues myself, and I volunteer at my local shelter in the winter months when I am not so busy photographing weddings.

How did you get started in photography? What was your earliest memory with a camera?

My dad bought me my first camera on my thirteenth birthday. I loved taking photos of people and animals. Seeing an emotion on a camera made me feel joy. I felt what they felt in that moment.

How would you define your style?

My style can be described as moody and romantic. I love to play with sunlight and movement. I adore a moody, blurred photo when the time is right. To me, it's like creating a piece of artwork.

What are some of your favorite moments to capture?

Some of my favorite moments to capture occur during engagement shoots, where I mostly get to know my couples for the first time. After about thirty minutes, you can feel them become more comfortable in their own skin, and after forty minutes, it’s like I am not even there; they focus on their love for each other, and I am fortunately present to make an artistic copy of a real and beautiful moment. By the time it comes to their wedding, they know me and accept me as part of the family.

What are some of your favorite wedding moments? The first look? Bridal prep?

My absolute favorite wedding moment is when it’s just myself and the bride for her bridal portraits. I always suggest at least thirty minutes alone with the bride after she is ready. This way, she relaxes before the ‘I do’s,’ I show her an image on my camera screen, and immediately she feels as beautiful as she looks and cannot wait to walk down the aisle. Secondly, I would have to say I love the couple portraits at sunset. Words cannot describe the new love that’s born on the end of a very special day.

What is some advice you would give to brides? From choosing their photographer to their big day, etc.

My advice to all brides would be to trust people. Trust your bridesmaids. Trust your planner. And most importantly, trust your photographer. When you choose a wedding photographer, you do so by looking at their previous work and their reviews and recommendations. Doubting your chosen wedding service providers adds unnecessary stress.

Anything else you would like to share with us? 

YES, in the presence of great love, something happens beyond the obvious. It’s a nuanced language of in-between moments that speak to the grand intentions words cannot. These moments often go unseen, but mean the most when looking back. Don’t let those moments slip away; keep them close forever. Invest in someone that can capture these moments perfectly.
